CM allocates Rs. 380m to deploy free WiFi hotspots at public places
The government of Punjab is making efforts to provide free internet access to the public through public WiFi hotspots under Metro WiFi Project and now it has allocated Rs. 380 million in order to kick-start the project formally. Metro WiFi Project will provide free WiFi to the public throughout the Metro Bus route, local Bus Stops, Railway Stations, Parks, Government Hospitals, and markets by deploying WiFi boosters. Wifi The allocation of the budget has been announced by the Chairman of Planning and Development Department Government of Punjab, Mr. Irfan Ilahi after chairing a meeting with Chairman PITB Dr. Umar Saif and other government officials yesterday. The PC-1 of this project has been prepared by Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) and the provincial capital Lahore will be the first city to avail free public WiFi. Apart from that, Punjab Government is also planning to set up e-libraries at public places as a part of E-Learning drive to digitize the existing education system. Therefore, a network of Content Servers which is a smallest independent machine, will soon be installed across the province to introduce e-libraries at public places like parks, hotels, shopping malls etc. Punjab government seems vigilant enough to bring about technological revolutions and make them accessible to the public as well but it remains to be seen that to which extent these projects will be helpful in the development of the country.
